Fertility Awareness Method - How can I help you?

What are Fertility Awareness Methods?

Fertility Awareness Methods (FAM) help you get to know your monthly cycle and allow you to use that information to manage your fertility.

Who can FAM help?

  • Are you trying to get pregnant but struggling to do it naturally?

  • Do you want to stop using medication, devices and chemicals to regulate your periods or avoid pregnancy?

  • Are you frustrated at being told you need spend the next few months or years trying conceive naturally before you are eligible for fertility treatment?

  • Is your cycle irregular and are you struggling to understand it?

  • Are you approaching or going through menopause and you’ve got no clue how to track your fertility naturally?

  • Do you need help following your fertility while breastfeeding?

Well choosing to follow Fertility Awareness Methods can help you address any of these issues in a natural way.

How can I help you?

Everything below will help you understand what you will be doing if you come for sessions with me to learn how to plan or delay pregnancy using FAM.

This journey will take into account your age, medical history, current or past use of artificial contraception and past pregnancies, miscarriages or terminations.

As a Registered Nurse working under the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Conduct you can be assured of total confidentiality and full compliance with GDPR Jersey Data Protection  Law 2018

Step 1: Get back to fertility basics

It is important to begin by knowing how your monthly cycle happens and what you need to know to be able to use this information to plan or delay pregnancy.

My first rule when meeting with a new client is to go over the basics. It is not to patronise people especially women who may have been charting or using various natural methods. I just prefer to establish that we are both on the same page regarding how the reproductive system works to avoid any misunderstanding as we progress.

What will we discuss?

  • Monthly Menstrual Cycle - what is it and how does it happen?

  • What is ovulation & how it happens

  • What hormones are involved & what do they do

  • Understanding of eggs and sperm life spans.

  • What we mean by fertile and unfertile times. Men are fertile usually 24/7 but women have just a short time each month of being fertile.

  • What signs we can use to monitor and learn about our fertile time

Step 2: We begin to use all of the above information to help you adopt fertility awareness methods (FAM):

  • Over a 6 month programme, we will build up a series of monitored cycles looking at length and patterns.

  • We will get to know the hormones involved and learn how their action can impact you.  Hormones are chemical substances that affect the activity of another part of the body (target site). In essence, hormones serve as messengers, controlling and coordinating activities throughout the body.

  • I will help you learn about three fertility indicators and how to interpret them. You may choose to only use two indicators but I will guide you on this. We will look at monitoring your Basal Body Temperature, Cervical Mucous and the Cervix Position.

  • We will also look at other factors which will impact your signs so you can be more accurate in your interpretations.

Step 3: Self-management once your 6 monthly sessions have been completed

Over my 6 month programme, we will usually establish a pattern which you can use to practice FAM independently. How will we decide if you’re ready for self-management?

  • We’ll see if you feel competent to continue to interpret your charts independently

  • We’ll arrange a follow up in 6 months time to look at your progress and to use the collected data to add in further helpful information based on your shortest cycle in 12 months.
